Padel basics

New to padel? You'll get it in one game.

Padel is doubles, played on an enclosed court with glass walls. The serve is underarm, the walls are in play, and the rallies last. If you've picked up a racket before, you'll be playing properly within minutes — swipe through the basics.

Padel basics for beginners
Serve: underarm, diagonal, below waist height, into the opponents' service box
Glass: the ball must bounce once before hitting the glass on your opponents' side
Glass: a shot that hits the opponents' glass or fence directly is out
Bounce: only one bounce is allowed, a second bounce is a point to your opponents

The four rules that matter

  • ServeUnderarm, below the waist, diagonally into the opposite service box.
  • BounceOne bounce only. A second bounce hands the point to the other pair.
  • GlassThe ball has to bounce on the floor before it touches your opponents' glass.
  • OutHit their glass or fence directly, without a bounce first, and you lose the point.

Two courts, floodlit, right by the sea.

Full-size outdoor courts with glass back walls and floodlighting, so an 8pm game in November works exactly like a 10am one in July.
